Starry Night - Art Therapy

A look at a newly finished piece from the Enchanted Forest colouring book by Johanna Basford.

This piece actually took me quite a long time to complete. Generally I tend to colour from about 11pm - 12.30 in the evenings after I've gotten ready for bed. A late night? Yes, well I generally finish work at 9-11pm so it's just how it is :)
Anyhow, these last few weeks I've only been able to work on this one for about an hour every second night or so, so I am super glad to have finished finally!

This piece is also my first 'evening' type; generally I don't colour in full backgrounds but I really wanted to do something a bit unusual for me. I absolutely love it!

I've used a mixture of fineliners and gel pens. The pastel pens are great for layering and lightening though it does take a few layers and patience. My skills are amateurish at best, but I liked using the different colours to explore the various light levels. I also loved being able to use a vibrant palette in a unique way compared to my usual pieces.

The Enchanted Forest basics:
Available: Yes, also from select bookstores.
Price: $17+ AUD
Size: A medium thickness paperback with dust cover - 84 pages at 254mm x 254mm x 14mm, weighing 550g
Paper: Medium thickness and smooth, colour does not go through easily but some pens have less pigmentation and vibrancy as the paper does not 'soak' in the ink. No bleeding.

Designs: Illustrations range from castles, forests, streams, animals and woodsy settings. Includes interaactive features, making it suitable for the younger generation as well as adults who just enjoy colouring. Some designs are a bit out of place - there's an oriental style dragon on a double page that folds out, the style of black colour blocking seem off from the whimsical-style we see through the rest of the book.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely.

Thank you for reading!
