This afternoon after work I decided to quickly swatch and capture Smelt of Elderberries in the dying afternoon light.
Smelt of Elderberries is the Shiro Cosmetics exclusive lip gloss for their Australian distributor, Femme Fatale. It currently retails for $9.35 inc GST.
Described as a "Somewhat sheer purpley-rose with an intense violet highlight", I would most definitely agree. The consistency was perfect, and the colour I absolutely love though unfortunately it is not my 'style'. I really like the soft luminescence that the violet highlight imparts, it gives an ethereal quality 'glow' which finishes this gloss off perfectly.
I do think that Smelt of Elderberries has a definite magenta-purple tone, and the sheerness is apparent. For those who like to add just a touch of colour or shine with their gloss, this is perfect for you. For those who enjoy an easy opaqueness to work with, I would recommend one of Shiro's other colours, as I do feel this was a struggle (but not an unpleasant one) to apply evenly when aiming for a higher level of opacity.
Being a sheer shade I also struggle with getting a crisp edge, however that is also in part due to my technique which I am yet to master. As with other Shiro glosses, this shade too came with a doe-foot applicator; and a pleasant subtle scent reminiscent of blackberries.
All in all I found Smelt of Elderberries to be a complimentary shade; and one that although sheer, is relatively easy enough to work with as long as you're not looking for maximum coverage. The classic weighty yet rich feel of Shiro's gloss was not missing from this shade. Although I love the colour and the quality, unfortunately this shade is not for me and will be gifted to a friend whom I am sure will love it as it deserves :)
Staining? None.
Wear time? Moderate. It will slip off over time as gloss tends to do.
Would I recommend? Absolutely, for those after a sheer gloss.
Thank you for reading!
