Initial review and first piece from Jenean Morrison's Pattern & Design Colouring Book Volume 1.
Today's completed piece comes from the Pattern & Design Colouring Book (Volume 1). This is my first book of Jenean's and so far I am enjoying it quite a bit. Although I really like doing fairytale/forest pieces, each piece involves a varying level of concentration (especially on the 'bigger picture' with landscape styles) so a simpler piece like this one was very relaxing.
So with Pattern & Design Vol 1, we have a much thinner paper type that takes colour extremely well. For this piece I used Staedtler Triplus 0.3mm Fineliners and a Stabilo Point 88 0.4mm Fineliner. The paper does bleed ever so slightly, and the ink saturates it heavily. We see that the colour goes through to the opposite side, but each page is not double sided so there is no stressing about ruining the next design.
I did also notice that the ink disperses quite nicely, making pen strokes less noticeable overall. The general outcome for me was a smoother finished piece, with nice bold and bright colours.
The Pattern & Design Vol 1 basics:
Available: Yes
Price: $20+ AUD
Size: A slim paperback - 106 pages at 212mm x 274mm x 10mm, weighing 280g
Paper: Thin and smooth, slight bleeding, high saturation, colour goes through to following side but designs are only one-per-page.
Designs: Various mandala, Arabesque, some floral. Overall patterns are on a larger scale, however most retain good levels of intricacy. Not a high level of detail so you won't be sitting there colouring in 1,000 tiny lines.
Tools: I would recommend using quality pencils, or fine-tipped pens including fine-tipped felt pens. I would use caution with larger markers/textas as the colour may bleed a little too much with those.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely.
Thank you for reading!
